 L’epidemia di colera che ha flagellato Haiti dopo il terremoto del 2010 ha dimostrato che Twitter e gli altri social network sono un ottimo strumento di monitoraggio per le emergenze sanitarie. La condivisione di contenuti da parte degli utenti della Rete, infatti, può essere complementare alle statistiche di rilevamento dei contagi da parte delle autorità sanitarie e secondo uno studio dell’Harvard Medical School e del Children’s Hospital di Boston fornisce dati anche con due settimane di anticipo rispetto a quelli ufficiali e comunque in tempo reale.
I ricercatori americani sono giunti a questa conclusione, pubblicata in uno studio sull’ American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, utilizzando HealthMap, un motore di ricerca online dal 2006 creato dagli epidemiologi di Harvard per esplorare il web e in particolare i social network a caccia di post e tweet in otto lingue "sensibili" per alcune parole chiave legate alle emergenze sanitarie (questa la mappa aggiornata oggi): nel caso dell’epidemia che ha colpito Haiti, nel periodo compreso tra il 20 ottobre 2010 e il 28 gennaio 2011 HealthMap ha registrato ben 188.819 tweet e 4.697 post.
